Best & Worst Laptop Brands 2015
The most important question we try to answer at Laptop Mag is the following: "What laptop should I buy?" It's a question with many facets and tons of possible answers. But, often, a good place to start is to decide which brand deserves your hard-earned dollars. Thus, we examine all the biggest notebook makers each year, taking a hard look at laptop quality, technical support, value and selection, and other criteria. - See more at: http://www.laptopmag.com
Some brands climbed our rankings in 2015, such as HP and Dell, but others crashed. Lenovo fell from second place all the way to sixth, thanks in part to lackluster tech support and the loading of dangerous adware on some consumer laptops.
1st Place: Apple
The undisputed king of laptop brands for six years and counting, Apple retains the No. 1 spot in this year’s survey. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company won 5 out of the 9 categories, including a perfect score for its laptop reviews. Its tech support score is also stellar, and the brand's keyboards and touchpads, audio quality and preloaded software can't be beat. Assuming you have the budget, Apple laptops are the way to go.
2nd Place: Dell
Jumping up to second place, Dell's rise over the last year has been something to behold. The company took first place in the categories of innovation, value and selection, as well as in audio. We were also impressed with Dell's reviews and technical support, which all point to why the brand rose from fifth place to runner-up.

3rd Place: HP
HP also rose in the ranks this year, going from fourth to third. We're big fans of the company's designs, and the attention it pays to audio quality. For laptop shoppers, HP customers have a huge selection of prices, styles and configurations from which to choose, and once you’ve made a decision, you can trust in the quality of the technical support.

How We Score
A brand's score hinges on many factors, from a company's ability to solve your problems to design and comfort. But we start by looking at the ratings and reviews of all laptops reviewed between January 31, 2014 to January 31, 2015.
For the Reviews category, points are awarded based on the ratings. For example, if a notebook had a rating of four stars, then it was awarded 4 points. A company received minus 1 point for any review lower than three stars, and was awarded 1 point for each Editors' Choice award. The total number of points for each brand were then added up and averaged. The company with the highest score received 20 points, while the rest received a percentage of that based on their score relative to the winner.
laptop-brands-2015-lead2
Our annual Tech Support Showdown forms the basis for that section. The scale starts with 20 points for an A+ score and goes down to 0 for an F. Within a grade (B-, B, B+) the point changes are less drastic than if a brand drops a full grade.
Design is essential in helping consumers choose a laptop. Thus, we look back at each brand's aesthetics, material choices and durability to come up with those 15 points possible.
We also examined how each brand fared in the individual benchmarks for Keyboard & Touchpads, Display and Audio categories. Those brands that beat the category averages for tests such as key travel, color brightness and accuracy as well as decibel output scored highest. We also examined our general experience with each brand in those categories for the last year.
A good score in the Innovation category points to an eagerness to embrace and successfully implement the newest technologies on the market. A good Value & Selection score is about how easy it is for a consumer to find and buy a brand's laptops, at a good price. The Software category score hinges on a company's branded and preloaded programs that come on new laptops. Are they useful, annoying, or — hopefully not — dangerous adware.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition finally receives Android 5.1
The now-discontinued Google Play Edition program used to pair the flagship smartphones from Android device manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC with stock Android from Google. That, however, turned out not to be a very enticing proposition for many, which is why the scheme was dropped.
But before that happened certain GPE devices did launch, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. It was just like the regular S4, but with software from Google - and no TouchWiz in sight. Furthermore, there was this (now laughable) promise of "Nexus-like" delivery of software updates.
That mostly has not materialized. Case in point: The S4 GPE is only now being updated to Android 5.1, build LMY47O. That particular version was first spotted on other devices back in April, believe it or not. It's unclear why it took five months or so for it to reach the Galaxy S4 GPE, but at least it's rolling out now.
And once you apply this update you'll no longer be stuck on the even more ancient Android 5.0 build LRX21P, from November 2014. At this rate, we wouldn't bet on the S4 GPE getting a Marshmallow treat. Or if it does eventually receive it, be prepared to wait well into 2016 for that to happen.
If you're impatient and haven't seen the update notification yet, you can head over to the Source link below to download the OTA ZIP file if you'd like to flash it manually (provided, of course, that you know how to do that).

Mortal Kombat X
Mortal Kombat X is a fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios. It is the tenth main installment in the Mortal Kombat video game series and was released on April 14, 2015 forPlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, scheduled to be ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by High Voltage Software in Q2/Q3 2015.[12] NetherRealm's mobile team developed a version for iOS and Android devices. The iOS version was released on April 7, 2015.
Like previous entries in the series, Mortal Kombat X is a fighting game in which two players fight against each other using a variety of attacks, special moves, and gruesome Fatalities.
The energy meter, first introduced in the previous Mortal Kombat game, allows players to perform techniques such as "X-Ray" special moves. Similarly to NetherRealm Studios' previous title, Injustice: Gods Among Us, fighters are able to interact with the environment, bouncing off areas to reposition themselves or using parts of the environment as weapons. In addition, each fighter has three different variations, each featuring a different set of moves they can use during the fight: for example, the character Scorpion features a Ninjutsu variation in which he wields dual swords, a Hellfire variation which relies more on fiery special moves, and an Inferno variation which allows him to summon hellspawn minions to aid him in the fight.
The sprint gauge, which was last seen inMortal Kombat 4/Gold, returns in this game. MKX features two new types of finishing moves: Quitality, which will instantly kill a player's character if they quit during a multiplayer match; and Faction Kills, finishing moves tied to each of the game's five factions. Brutality finishing moves make a comeback from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in the form of enhanced versions of certain moves that are triggered when they are used to give the opponent the last attack in a round.

How to Recover Deleted Files, Contacts, Calendars, and Photos From iCloud
Apple’s iCloud now allows you to undelete files you’ve deleted from iCloud
Drive, restore recently deleted photos, and revert your contacts and calendars
to a previous state. If you accidentally deleted something, you can get it
back.
The data may also be stored elsewhere, too. For example, if you’re syncing
your iPhone’s contacts with Gmail, you can restore contacts from within Gmail.
But iCloud is maturing and gaining features competitors have had for a long
time.
Apple now allows you to restore iCloud Drive files, contacts, and calendars.
However, you’ll have to visit iCloud’s website to do it. There’s no trash folder
in iCloud Drive as there is in other cloud storage services, which means this is
the only way to regain access to a file once you’ve deleted it.
To access this feature, visit the iCloud website and sign in with your Apple
ID. Verify yourself to gain access to the website, and then click the Settings
icon. Scroll down and you’ll see “Advanced” options at the bottom of the page.
At the bottom-left corner of the web page, you’ll see links to “Restore Files,”
“Restore Contacts,” and “Restore Calendars & Reminders.”
When restoring files, you can choose the individual files you want to
restore. Files appear to be kept for 30 days after you delete them.
When restoring contacts or calendars and reminders, you can’t restore
individual items. Instead, you’re restoring a “snapshot” of the state of your
contacts or calendars at that specific previous date. This is useful if you
accidentally delete something.
If you’re using Apple’s iCloud Photo Library to store your photos online, you
can also restore deleted photos. You can restore these photos on iCloud’s
website, on a Mac with the Photos app, or on your iPhone or iPad.
Any
Web Browser: Go to iCloud’s website, sign in, click the Photos icon,
select the “Albums” category, and open the “Recently Deleted”
album.iPhone or iPad: Open the Photos app, select Albums, and
select Recently Deleted.Mac OS X: Open the Photos app, click
the File menu, and select “Show Recently Deleted.” Unlike on other platforms,
there’s no “Recently Deleted” album in the Albums view here.
As with files you delete in iCloud Drive, copies of your deleted photos are
stored for 30 days.
On a Mac, you can potentially use Time Machine to restore files and other
data, assuming you’re backing up with Time Machine. For example, if you want to
restore files you’ve deleted from iCloud Drive, open the Time Machine
file-restore interface and select the iCloud Drive folder. Older copies of your
iCloud Drive files should appear here.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to work properly on Mac OS X Yosemite. Time
Machine seems to interact with iCloud Drive in a weird way, and may not may not
be backing up all the data you’ve stored in iCloud Drive. It’s probably better
to use the restore feature on the iCloud website.
In a worst-case scenario, you could potentially restore this data from a
device backup.
For example, let’s say you never enabled iCloud contact-syncing on your
iPhone, but you desperately need to restore your contacts after they’ve been
deleted. If you created backups of your iPhone in iTunes, you could restore
those full device backups to your phone and get the data — and everything else —
back to the state it was in when the backup was created.
You could potentially do this with iCloud backups, too. Restore an iCloud
backup to the device and you can restore its contacts, calendars, and other data
to the state it was in. However, if you do have iCloud enabled, restoring
individual types of data will likely be a better solution.
This isn’t necessarily the only way to restore data, of course. If you’re
syncing that data with other services, you can use the other service to restore
data. For example, if you automatically upload photos to Dropbox or Google
Photos, you can restore deleted photos from those apps and websites.
If you sync your contacts with your Google account, you can go to the Gmail
website, open the Contacts view, and use the More > Restore contacts option
to restore deleted contacts. Other services may have similar tools.
Apple iPad Pro with 12.9" Retina display is now official
The first major announcements made by Apple today were a couple of tablets -
the new iPad Pro and the iPad mini 4.
The Apple iPad Pro is undoubtedly the more interesting of the duo,
packing a big 12.9" display with 2732 x 2048 pixels resolution, which keeps the
same pixel density as the iPad Air 2 - 264ppi.
The new display is capable of variable refresh rate, which should improve the
battery life. It also comes with a new accessory called announced Apple Pencil -
an active stylus specifically designed for the iPad Pro. You can draw various
diagrams and stuff on most of the system apps - they have been already updated
to support it.
Since the Apple Pencil is an active stylus, it comes with a lightning port
and you'll have to recharge it on a regular basis.
The iPad Pro is powered by a brand new A9x chip, which according to Apple
offers twice the memory bandwidth of the A8x (within the iPad Air 2), twice the
flash storage speed, 1.8x better overall performance and twice the GPU
processing power. We can't confirm the new CPU core count and clock, neither can
we yet detail the GPU and RAM amount.
Apple also says the iPad Pro is faster than 90% of all portable PCs shipped
within the last year.
The iPad Pro has a promised battery life of 10 hours if you are to use it
nonstop.
Apple iPad Pro comes with four speaker system, which support automatic
balance depending on how you tilt the slate. There is no word if this is a
surround setup, or just a double stereo, but we?d bet on the latter.
The iPad Pro is big, but it's just 6.9mm thin and weighs 712g, which is
decent for the size.
Apple announced another exclusive accessory for the iPad Pro - the Smart
Keyboard, which is basically Apple's take on the Surface Type cover.
The Smart Keyboard is an external keyboard, which is magnetically attached
via the new magnetic smart connector. It offers a full-blown keyboard and thus
you'll have the entire screen estate for your apps.
The Apple Pencil behaves similarly to Samsung's S-Pen, even though it uses
different technology - you can draw on documents, emails, add notes to
word/excel documents. Apple announced it has cooperated with Microsoft and the
MS Office was optimized for the iPad Pro and its Apple Pencil.
Apple iPad Pro runs on iOS 9 by default and it supports picture-in-picture
and spilt screen view.
The Apple iPad Pro comes with the same 8MP iSight camera the Apple iPad Air 2
offered. Its connectivity options are virtually the same - Bluetooth, Wi-Fiac,
and optional LTE Cat.4 support. There is a Touch ID sensor as well.
Apple iPad Pro will become available in November in Silver, Space Gray and
Gold. The avaialble storage options are 32GB ($799) and 128GB ($949). The LTE
model comes with 128GB only and costs $1079.
Finally, the Smart Keyboard will set you back $169, while the Apple Pencil is
priced at $99.
Apple iPad mini 4 is now replacing the iPad mini 3. Apple was rather
quiet on its specifics though - all it said was that it was a downsized Air 2,
so we are guessing an A8x chip and a fingerprint sensor. It will kick off this
November at starting price of $399.
The iPad mini 2 remains available and its starting price is now $269.
